Hello all.
After a few weeks of largely weathering diesels and wagons i decided to have a week of trying something different..... some steam. I have a few steam engines turning up in the post over the next few days for weathering commisions so i thought it would be good to get some of my own weathered after not doing any for a month or so. Im not old enough to have ever steam in real life so when it comes to weathering these locos photographs become all the more important. Flickr is a brilliant source for this as are old Steam World magazines i have lying around. There are many millions of steam photos out there but colour ones are slightly harder to find. Obviously colour is vital to what we are trying to achieve so you need to be able to see the colour variations.... even if alot of the old photos do have a magenta tint to them. (Which gives me a little idea but thats for another post!)
Weathering steam locos that are BR black and green is something i have alot of experience in but when it comes to pre nationalisation locos im slightly less well versed. Its also a case that as these locos were far better looked after the weathering needs to be far more subtle. Using a selection of different colours all carefully airbrushed, combined with other techniques, the results below hopefully show what can be achieved... from end of steam limescale, rust and soot build up to the more everyday appearance of the LNER locos. Ive only put a few photos on here but more photos can be found on my Flickr site or The Weathering Works website... theweatheringworks.co.uk
P.s... shameless plug but lets face it thats what this blog is for...the above locos along with many others are available to buy via my ebay site... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/The-Weathering-Works

The stock
Well having promised photos of the weathered stock in my previous post i have finally found time (a week later) to upload a few photos. These are all up for sale on eBay but hopefully just give a sample of the kind of stuff i can do.
Having built a new diorama to photo them on i realised i didnt have a background! So had to quickly run off a few sheets of A4 and position them the best i could. Eventually i will get a proper background printed much larger but it had to suffice for then.
A selection of wagons taken against my new diorama:
The locos were done using a new technique i have adapted after reading a few hints tips etc and have to say im very impressed with it. I have used the technique before when starting off however a few years down the line and with much more experience under my belt a return to the technique has worked wonders on the locos i hope.
Poor paint adhesion was a problem for alot of locos and perhaps a few too many times through the washer was the effect i was going for on this batch.
As can be seen on the InterCity 37 above the paintwork has been chipped and scuffed etc to appear thoroughly workworn. I wont make this post too picture heavy but hopefully you can see how from humble beinnings a couple of posts ago a pristine boxed engine can look dirtier grubbied and weathered... courtesy of The Weathering Works. P.S I am currently setting up my Flickr site for photos so keep checking back as more and more get uploaded!

Busy Sunday!
Its Sunday again and as ever various rooms of the house are full of stock. I list most of my items via eBay on a Sunday so inevitably the space gets messy through the week culminating in the mess you see below! The weekly clean up starts bright and early Monday morning and the fun bit of picking out this weeks stock to weather begins. Any commision weathering jobs i have been sent get done throughout the week so as you can see its pretty busy at times!
The wagons are awaiting roof weathering, and underframe weathering whilst the engines are still in their boxes. Tomorrow will not only be a day of cleaning up but also a busy day weathering and testing the engines. Hopefully by tomorrow night they will be up on eBay and noone but you and me will ever know of their previous dull unrealistic plastic appearance!
This weeks items include some pretty nice kit built open wagons aswell as some nice vent vans and a good selection of n gauge stock. As ever the locos are many and varied also. 11 diesels in total... i think next week will require some steam locos!
As time goes by and my site is up and running properly i hope to be able to offer you more interesting posts but for now heres just a little insight into the strange model world i spend most of my life surrounded by.

The Beginning!
Hello there! Welcome to the blog of The Weathering Works!
Well this is hopefully the first post of many. I have been selling weathered model railway items through eBay for a while now and frequently get requests to do commision work so i have recently opened a new website... www.TheWeatheringWorks.co.uk
In the era of social media i thought i should start a blog to go along side!
The Blog will keep you up to date with my latest projects and offerings aswell as hints & tips along the way.
For now i will leave it at that but please visit my site www.TheWeatheringWorks.co.uk and feel free to get in touch!
Cheers, Scott. (TheWeatheringWorks)
